Kakita Komachi and Initial Targeting

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 April 2008 to 20 April 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Card Title: Kakita Komachi (The Truest Test) Relevant Text: "Open: Discard the top card of your Fate deck: You may target a Personality with Chi less than its Focus Value. Bow him."

How does this personality work with Initial Targeting? You don't know what will be a legal target until after paying the cost portion, so how does this work with Initial Targeting restrictions?

Kakita Komachi: How does this personality work with Initial Targeting?

There is no "initial" required targeting. It's all targeting as effect. http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _targeting: "Targeting that is delayed happens at the time it is delayed to."

In regards to: Kakita Komachi and Initial Targeting

Does this mean that Kakita Komachi's ability is targeted after the card is discarded from the top of the deck?

Yes.

Required and optional targeting in the constraints block and required targeting in the effects block all occur during step B, "Required targeting" of the Using abilities sequence, but optional targeting in the effects block occurs during step D, "Action resolves". The card is discarded in step C, "Pay costs".
