even if [Adeiko] is dead? questions

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 March 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

if you could answere the following questions 1 and 2 with respect to current and erratad text that would be apreaciated

Shosuro Adeiko new text Reaction: After a battle resolution or another player's trait or action resolves, if its effects destroyed one of your Personalities at Adeiko's location (including Adeiko): Give a target Personality a -3F/-1C token, and an additional -1C token if he is dishonorable

question 1 shosuro adeiko is killed by hired killers. she goes into the grave and then she can react from the grave? i thought she needed the even if dead trate to do this, that is why i am asking.

question 2 shosuro Adeiko is in a pattle resolution where she dies she can use here ability from in the graveyard?

question 3 does this mean that the bolded text on "Shiba Daizan" below is redundant text since you can react from the gravyard without it? pease explain ether answere :p

Shiba Daizan Text Phoenix Clan • Samurai • Hero • Yojimbo Reaction: Before another player's action destroys one of your Shugenja in your home or at Daizan's battlefield, even if Daizan is dead, remove him from the game: Negate the Shugenja's destruction.

thank you for your time.

Yes.

shosuro Adeiko is in a pattle resolution where she dies she can use here ability from in the graveyard?

Yes.

does this mean that the bolded text on "Shiba Daizan" below is redundant text since you can react from the gravyard without it?

Not redundant. It's another way of accomplishing the same thing, making an exception to the general rule.

so what you are saying in thread "even if [Adeiko] is dead? questions" is that adeiko can react from the gravyard? http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66520

situation I have 3 adeikos is the gravyard dead. and i loose and other personality, now from the gravyard currently your saying my 3 adeikos can react and hand out three -3f/-1c + -1c(if dishonord) tokens to people pre erratad?

Not at any random time, no (e.g., she can't react several turns after she was destroyed). She can react only immediately after she was destroyed even though she is in the discard pile.

You said that Shosuro Adeiko can react while dead, this mean if she is dead and he trigger goes off she can use her ability.

Because of this ruling you are saying that if I have dead Shosuro Adeiko who has not used her ability yet this turn and her trigger gets activated. (a personality i control dies for any reason[pre errata]) She can hand out her effect. (-3f/-1c + -1c if dishonored)?

Can personality use their abilities from the gravyard if all other restrictions are met? for example most reactions and any person with the text "even if [this card] is not at the current battle"

So do personalities need to be dead or can they just be discarded?

Houhou says "If Houhou is honorably dead: " that is a additional restriction that doesnt say you can do a action if you are dead does it?

Is there a rule that prevents a personality from taking a action from the gravyard? (i had previously been going on common sense to say no but this areas to directly contradict that)

The standard rule is that you can only use the abilities of a card if you control that card.

Use of abilities on cards that are out of play need explicit exceptions to let you use them while out of play. Phrases like "Even if [cardname] is dead / in your discard pile," are the most common example. The other common example is when a card has a Reaction with a timing trigger that comes after the card has left play, such as "After [cardname] is destroyed."

Adeiko is an example of a card with the latter type of exception. She has a Reaction that states you can use it after she is destroyed. You can use it after she is destroyed even though she is now in the Discard Pile. You can not use it in Reaction to any other Personality being destroyed if you do not control her.
