Standard Bearers

L5R CCG Rules board, 16 March 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

For the follower Standard Bearers:

This Personality has +1 Personal Honor. After a Resolution Segment ends, if this card was in the winning army, and was opposed at any time during that battle: Gain 3 Honor.

Do you need to be opposing any units during resolution to be considered part of the winning army? For example, if a unit containing Standard Bearers is defending a province and all attacking units are sent home from the battle, is the defending army still considering the winning army, even though there are no attacking units during resolution?

This is from the comprehensive rules regarding battle resolution: Headings A through C happen in sequence as part of the Resolution Segment.

A. Compare the total Force of each army. Whichever army has the most Force wins (see Force total). A side with no units has zero force for purposes of this comparison, and does not count as an army for effects that alter the force of an “army”. The calculation and comparison of army force is made only once. Any changes to army force after this point (e.g., units on the winning side being destroyed to to reactions) do not alter the outcome. Regarding this:

I understand that you gain the honor if there was an army and now there isn't one, however, what if there was never one, i.e. I attack with one unit with Standard Bearers. My opponent has no units in play or doesn't defend. I resolve that battle and don't take the province. Do I still gain honor?

Thanks,

-Steve

Emphasis mine; if the Standard Bearers were never opposed at any time during the battle their army wins, then their trait does not trigger.
