Defending units returning home

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 February 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Question : After an Ambush or a Heated Discution, when do the defending units return home?

CR says : After Resolution

After a battle’s Resolution Segment ends, or after Resolution would end if it is somehow avoided, follow steps A through C in order.

A. Regardless of who wins, loses, or ties in the battle, all surviving attacking and allied units return home, and these units are then bowed by the battle’s resolution if they returned home.

Surviving defending units remain at the battlefield, unless the Province was destroyed, in which case they return home at the same time as attacking units would.

Returning home in this manner is not considered “moving.”

B. Discard all Terrains in play at the battlefield that just resolved; this cannot be negated.

C. The Resolution Segment, and the battle, end at the same time. The battle is considered resolved, even if the Resolution Segment was somehow avoided.

If no battlefields that haven’t resolved a battle remain, then all units still at battlefields return home, are bowed by resolution if they were attacking or allied, and all battlefields cease to exist.

Nothing state anything when the battlefield created is not linked to a province. I think it may be in step C, but is it before or after the battle end?

I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Nothing in these steps differentiates between Battlefields associated with Provinces and Battlefields that are not.

If you finish Resolution at the last Battlefield in an Ambush (there's typically only 1 since the card only creates 1) units go home just like they would after resolving the last Battlefield in an Attack Phase.

concerning this post: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65476

i am quite sure the question has been posted after a question on a french forum which where the following:

i play kyuden wasuremono and my opponent play seventh tower: he has two personality hida A (a generic crab) and hida kuon (xp5). I have a magistrate ninja shosuro B that have more chi than hida A.

during my turn i play heated discussion from shosuro B on hida A. then during the heated discussion i play my stronghold action thus reducing hida A chi to 0. hida A did not die since heated discussion negate continously his death and if he goes back home he will not die either since kuon will prevent him from having 0 chi.

but is there a moment between those two states where the battle is over (and so heated discussion does not prevent death anymore) but hida A is still assign to the battefield created by heated discussion (and so is not in the same location as hida kuon)?

No. "During battle," extends from when Armies Engage through the last part of the "after resolution" timing for that Battle. If it happens to be the last battlefield, then sending home of all lingering units happens "during" that battle, as well as the elimination of all battlefields.

Regarding this : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65483

I just want to be sure I read it correctly (I get the first part right, thanks Marty):

----------------- CR says : After Resolution

After a battle’s Resolution Segment ends, or after Resolution would end if it is somehow avoided, follow steps A through C in order.

A. Regardless of who wins, loses, or ties in the battle, all surviving attacking and allied units return home, and these units are then bowed by the battle’s resolution if they returned home.

B. Discard all Terrains in play at the battlefield that just resolved; this cannot be negated.

C. The Resolution Segment, and the battle, end at the same time. The battle is considered resolved, even if the Resolution Segment was somehow avoided.

If no battlefields that haven’t resolved a battle remain, then all units still at battlefields return home, are bowed by resolution if they were attacking or allied, and all battlefields cease to exist;

-----------------

The part about the unit returning home if no battlefield is left to resolve is written AFTER step C, who state the battle end here. If I get your ruling right, it means this line is checked BEFORE the step C state the battle end. If so, the CR may be a little unclear about it.

Yeah that wording is pretty confusing. Take for example the start of "after resolution."

"After a battle’s Resolution Segment ends, or after Resolution would end if it is somehow avoided, follow steps A through C in order."

Then you have steps A, B, and C, which includes "The Resolution Segment, and the battle, end at the same time. The battle is considered resolved, even if the Resolution Segment was somehow avoided."

But weren't we already past the Resolution Segment?

I'll see what I can do to to clear that up.

Rest assured in this: nobody is left in any sort of "limbo" without Battlefields or being at home, and the moving home from battle resolution does not happen outside of the Battle or the Attack Phase.
