RE: Test of X (E&JC)

L5R CCG Rules board, 20 December 2007 to 22 December 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

The various test cards in E&JC set all read "reveal the top card of your deck and target one of your personailities... "

Is it correct that I am revealing the card/focus value before selecting which personaity is targeted by the test?

(thus allowing me to pick suitable targets that the test will be a sucess for)

Also as there is no mention of discarding the revealed card or shuffling it back into the deck doe sthe card remain on top of the deck, allowing for multiple tests in sucession to be performed with the same reveled cards. Correct?

RE: This.

I believe the first answer above is not correct.

Test Actions from E&JC read, roughly, "Show a card and target a Personality". The question was as to whether the card was shown before the Personality was targeted. Zen answered by quoting the CR that "Mandatory costs are paid in the order written."

However, in the CR under "Abilities and Actions", targeting (including required targeting in the contraints block) happens in the Targeting step, which is prior to the Pay Costs step, during which non-targeting costs (such as showing the card) would happen. I assume this takes precedence over "pay in the order written", which is needed to clarify the order of multiple costs that are not only targeting (for example, Temple to Shinsei says "Bow this card and one of your target Shugenja or Monks...", so you would first target the Monk in the Targeting step, then pay the costs in the Pay Costs step in order, bowing first the Temple, then the Monk you targeted.)

We finally have fixed some mod issues, so you may be seeing more follow-up posts merged into one thread in future.

I understand the rule as explained but the order in which the contraints block is written seems counter intuitive, especially for new players. Can someone explain to me why the constraints block text for TEST cards from E&JC are written like this?

Test Limited : Show the top card of your Fate deck and target one of your unbowed Human Personalities: If the Focus Value of the card is lower than the target's base Chi, put the card in your hand.

Instead of this?

Test Limited : Target one of your unbowed Human Personalities and show the top card of your Fate deck : If the Focus Value of the card is lower than the target's base Chi, put the card in your hand.

This reminds me of Lotus.

Even if any of the deputy rules guys knew the answer, that's not really within the purview of the forum.
