Adeiko Correction

L5R CCG Rules board, 12 October 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

How can Adeiko not react to the cost? Or are you just sticking to the previous ruling just because. Here is Adieko again:

Reaction: After the effects resolve of a battle resolution, action, or trait that destroyed Adeiko or one of your other Personalities: Give a target Personality a -3F/-1C token, and an additional -1C token if he is dishonorable.

If we break this apart:

"Reaction: After the effects resolve"

All we are looking here for is the effects to resolve. It does not say "After Effects" which would mean it would have to be an effect. It says "After THE effects resolve" meaning you have to wait until the action resolves. I.E. wait for the end of effects on a card.

To continue:

"of a battle resolution, action, or trait..."

How is battle resolution an effect? How is a trait an effect? Again, going back above.. you are waiting for THE effects portion of the card to resolve. OR for the entire battle to resolve. The card reads this way so you can not in the middle of battle resolution, have Adieko destroyed, and kill a personality, and before the battle resolves now not have enough force.

If you rule that her reaction is not a timing issue, then her reaction can clearly interrupt other peoples actions and battle resolution. Which is exactly what you guys are trying to stay away from.

I will ask you to go back and check your previous rulings and not stick by them just because they were made.

Here is a question:

With the previous rulings of Adeiko, IF THEY STAND, Since her reaction is NO LONGER a timing trigger, can I UNDER THE CURRENT RULINGS, use her reaction to give people -3/-1 tokens during battle resolution, but before the province is taken. Thus killing their personalities, or disrupting the enemy armies total force so that they would not be able to take the province?

Edit: in the Rules Guide Adeiko does say After Effects resolve. The 3 copies of the card in front of me say After THE effects resolve. Is this a typo in the rules guide? Also, after looking in the rules guide even deeper; Her reaction can still clearly be read as "After effects resolve of" You aren't looking for the effect to kill someone, only waiting for timing to be correct.

Edit pt 2: I went and checked every card scan I quickly could find. Yes, all samurai edition Adeikos do say "After THE effects". This is in contrast to the rules guide.

How can Adeiko not react to the cost?

Due to precedent, consultation with other members of the Rules Junta, and knowledge not yet released about the printing of the card in the second printing of Samurai Edition.

Or are you just sticking to the previous ruling just because.

No.
