Mountains of the Phoenix question

L5R CCG Rules board, 26 September 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

I was just looking over Mountains of the Phoenix and I was wondering if after playing the card, presence was necessary to use the effects. It uses the word "choose" rather than target, so I'm assuming there's no required targets for the action so if one side has one unit and one has zero, at Battle resolution, there should be nobody left. There's also no cost as far as I can tell, but the word "Then" in the last sentence is making me question it. Thanks for any help.

Relevant text: Mountains of the Phoenix Before this battle's resolution, the Attacker and the Defender each choose a unit in their own army; the active player decides who chooses first. Then, destroy the chosen units.

No. You need presence to take the action -- that is, to put the Terrain into play. You don't need presence to resolve delayed effects.
