L5R CCG Rules board, 19 September 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Ragarding this

Control says: Dark Virtue Open: Target one of your unbowed Samurai: Target a Personality. He can not straighten while your Samurai remains unbowed and in play.

My understanding of this card is that "while" means that the targeted Personality cannot straighten if certain conditions are fulfilled (your Samurai being unbowed and in play, in this case) no matter if he becomes bowed or leaves play somewhere between such periods. Zen also quotes the glossary and the meaning of the word "until". This is, in my opinion, the word which should be used if we wanted the effect of Control to end when the targeted Samurai bows or leaves play the first time, as it "Indicates that an effect lasts to a certain point in time." "While" suggests rather that an effect last as long as the Samurai is unbowed and in play and imply that it should kick in everytime its conditions are fulfilled, while not saying that it should permanently end when it is no longer true (as "until" does).

Thanks

Is there an actual question in there?

Remain

A duration that lasts while something “remains” in a given state, ends whenever the thing is no longer in that state. Example: “While this Personality remains bowed”.

Contrast with an effect that applies if or while something “is” in a given state – that effect has a normal duration and can turn on and off as the thing fluctuates between states.
