Re: Strike of the Dragon

L5R CCG Rules board, 2 September 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

In reference to this question & answer.

(Special Wording Rules: Pronouns) Pronouns and pronoun-like terms, like "him," "it," "them," or "that Personality," refer to the last possible thing mentioned in the text that the term would logically refer to.

(Strike of the Dragon) Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Rings and one of your target Monks: Bow one to three target Personalities opposing him, each with Force higher than his own Chi.

In the text of Strike of the Dragon, we can assume that 'him' refers to 'one of your target Monks' performing the action, as the 'one to three target Personalities opposing him' cannot oppose themselves. (Example B. "Target one of your Personalities: Bow a target Personality opposing him." "him" would refer to your Personality, as a Personality cannot oppose himself.) From that reference point, it seems most logical that the 'last possible thing' mentioned in the text that 'his' could refer to (as a singular masculine possessive pronoun) is 'him'. (singular masculine object pronoun) That it comes before 'one to three target Personalities' when referring to the 'last possible thing' further cements this logical conclusion.

*edit* and the question is ... What am I not noticing if I'm wrong?
