Cut Them Off, additional actions

L5R CCG Rules board, 28 July 2007 to 30 July 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If a player moves into a battle and is granted an addition action (either through "may take an additional action" or "then take an additional action"), at what point is the action considered resolved for purposes of Cut Them Off? (ie, can I bow them before they take the additional battle action?)

I seem to recall a ruling with Shiro Kitsuki and Kensaku that once you'd popped out and then declared that you were going to take an additional action he could bow your personality (before you actually took the action). Does this apply in this case?

Doomed Intentions "Battle: If there are enemy units at the current battlefield: Move one of your target units there. If it moved, straighten it. If you are the Defender, take an additional Battle action printed on a card in the unit."

Doji Doukihito "Battle: If any attacking enemy Personality at the current battlefield has lower Personal Honor than Doukohito: Move Doukohito there. Bow all dishonorable Personalities there. You may take an additional Battle action"

Cut Them Off "Reaction: After an action resolves that moved any units to a battlefi eld, target one of your Personalities there: Bow one target unit that moved; if your Personality is not Cavalry, the target unit’s Personality must have lower Chi than yours."

Shiro Kitsuki "Battle: Once per battle: Target a face-down Personality attached to one of your Provinces. If he would be opposed, bring him into play face-up at the current battlefield, ignoring costs. You may take an additional Battle action."

Kensaku "Reaction: If Kensaku is at the current battlefield, after another player’s Battle action resolves, reduce Kensaku’s Force by 3: Target an opposing card. Bow it."Kyuden Kitsuki Thanks, Leon

The two Actions are distinct. Taking an additional Battle Action would be considered a "Delayed Effect."

Delayed Effects are Effects that are produced at one instance (like when resolving an Event or Battle Action), but do something at a later time rather than immediately (such as Dishonoring the next Personality to bow, or giving you an extra Action after this one).

So the Battle Action will be "resolved" when you reach the end of its ability text - even if produced Delayed Effects that resolve at a later time. Instructions from one Battle Action to take "additional" Actions are usually Delayed until after the initial Action finishes resolving.

Most of the time this is relatively seamless, since Action-gaining is typically the last effect on the ability anyway. When you get a nit-picky Reaction case, the first action resolves before the gained action is taken.
