Is a Minimum a Bonus?

L5R CCG Rules board, 28 July 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If a Minimum value is imposed upon a stat that is lower than that value, is this considered a bonus?

In the Comprehensive Rules, Bonuses/Penalities and Minimum/Maximums are always referred to as seperate entities. The steps to determining the current value of a given stat are, 1. Apply bonuses/penalities, 2. If it's below 0, treat it as 0, 3. If it is below a minimum or above a maximum, treat it as that number.

So it seems Min/Max's are not bonuses or penalities, except for one little sentence in the Stat section that says "Any change to a stat's value is considered a bonus (if increased) or penality (if decreased)."

So, is applying a Min/Max ("treat it as") a "change"?

If the answer to these questions is "no", I'll take up the issue in the CR troubleshooting thread.
