Question about Akodo Hachigoro

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 July 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

OK, I ran a search and came out with nothing. Akodo Hachigoro reads as follows:

Akodo Hachigoro Lion Clan • Samurai • Tactician Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage: You may target one of the Defender's units, move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, and straighten it. You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action or pass this battle.

Now, my friend was testing his new Lion deck against my DVD Scorpion deck and we came to a situation. He attacked with Hachigoro and Benika. I defended with Paneki. He targeted Paneki with his reaction. I didn't want to argue cause I knew I had the cards to defend but does Hachigoro really work this way. I mean, the card says move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, but he can't move me because I'm already there.

An action’s required targets consist of anything that is targeted by the player taking the action in the action's constraints or effects, unless the targeting is shown to be optional by terms such as “may target,” or “lose 2 Honor or target a Personality you control.”
