i happen to have ask exactly the same question (i think) here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=59064
with the opposite answer: could you pleased explain me the difference between the two scenarii?
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I think the difference would be confusion over exactly who is who.
Defending units stay around at Battlefields where Battle Resolution has taken place for the remainder of the Attack Phase - even after Attackers and Allies return home due to Battle Resolution. There is still a Battlefield there to move units to. There are still Defending Units to oppose any units moved into an Attacking Army.
Reinforce the Gates will work to move Attacking Units from the Current Battlefield to the Battlefield that has already hosted a Battle Resolution this Attack Phase and has Defending Units present.
Under most normal circumstances, however, it would not be useful for Defending Units to "bail out" of the Current Battle for the relative safety of a Battlefield that has already hosted Battle Resolution - as they would not normally have any Attacking Units to oppose the Defenders.
