Palm Strike vs. Kumade

L5R CCG Rules board, 14 July 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I play Palm Strike and, in reaction, my opponent plays Kumade. How does this resolve? My opponent in the mentioned play and I both could see the issue resolving in one of two possible manners either a) the Palm Strike fails as Kumade resolves first or B) the Kumade is considered to be in play only after the Palm Strike resolves. The text of Kumade does not seem to indicate exactly how this situation should play out. I am on the side of the Kumade "countering" the Palm Strike, but I do not know if this was the intent of the card or even how it works under the rules.

I'm just now getting back into the game, so this may have a simple answer (a?), and I'm just not seeing it.

Kumade is irrelevant. Targeting is over by the time the Reaction occurs.

Rules, Abilities, Targeting: "If any of an action's targeting becomes illegal at any point after all targeting and reactions to targeting occurs, the effects of the action still occur, subject only to interference with paying costs."
