A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
A player, 10 July 2007
If I perform an action, and the cost is destroying a personality. What happens if I do something to delay that death?
As a concrete example, say, Ikkaku's battle action, and Courage in Death.
Ikkaku:
Battle: Destroy Ikkaku: Destroy a target non-Unique Personality opposing Ikkaku with more Force than him.
Courage in Death:
Reaction: Before one of your Personalities is destroyed during battle: Give another target Personality a Force bonus equal to your Personality's Chi. If you are a Crab Clan player, delay your Personality's destruction until after the battle ends.

If the personality is not destroyed, you have not paid the cost.
