Legal/Illegal Cards

L5R CCG Rules board, 30 June 2007

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I bought a lot of about 5000 L5R cards about a year a go in the hopes of getting all my friends into the game. Many of them have 'DE' printed on them and I guess this means Diamond Edition and there are all kinds of different sets ranging from ones printed in 2003-05. I have downloaded the rule book but have yet to work out exactly how to play the game and I guess I would need to be around people who know what they're doing to learn it.

I've done some snooping around the site and I've noticed Samaurai Edition is out and that there are some rule changes. I'm wondering if the cards are legal in organised tournament play, from what I understand i've thrown my money down the drain and i've got a boxfull of useless cards. I'm hoping I'm wrong and that these cards are useful for another tournament type like type 1 in MTG. Can anyone help me out?

I couldnt reply to the topic so i'm adding an edit. I was wondering which sets are legal in samaurai edition play(other than reprinted), is it just SE or are there other full sets I could use from my collection (again, as far as I know, the only cards I have are marked 2005 at the latest).

A list of Samurai legal cards is here. Many cards from previous sets have been reprinted in Samurai Edition and those are legal for play, and they play according to the Samurai Edition wording.

Legacy format is an effort to provide a tournament format for cards released prior Khan's Defiance.
