L5R CCG Rules board, 1 April 2005 to 4 April 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

1) Can a personality that's not in play count as performing an action?

It depends, really. Some of the criteria on page 71 require the Personality to be under your control ("your Personalities" in the Rulebook). Some do not.

Example: Kakita Munemori and Gempukku.

First, just to make sure I'm not misreading anything, Gempukku does require targetting the personality it affects, so it would fall under the 3rd criteria for when a personality performs an action, correct?

But for that line saying, "targeting your own Personalities who meet certain conditions." Personalities in Provinces don't qualify.

2) From the "caster" entry in the glossary, it appears that only a performing Shugenja or Monk can be considered to cast a kiho. If a Kiho is performed by a personality who is neither a Shugenja nor a Monk, is that personality considered the Kiho's caster?

Example: Hitomi's Glare, Hitomi Akuai, and Asahina Sekawa (exp)

Hitomi's Glare is performed by Akuai (who is neither a Shugenja nor a Monk). Was Akuai the caster of Hitomi's glare (in which case Sekawa can force a discard), or was there no caster (in which case there would also be no "caster's player" to do the discarding)?

That's a very odd card interaction. I've got my own ideas about this card, but this is really a Jeff issue. I'll pass it along to him.

Since merely targetting a personality in a province with an action does not mean that personality performs that action, Imbue Chi's Reaction isn't performed by anyone, right?

And since the glossary definition of "caster" includes performing the Kiho, no one is casting it and City of Rememberance should be able to use it, right?

Same question about whether or not it counts as "cast" for the likes of Ring of Air applies.

I'm forwarding this question over to Jeff in regards to imbue Chi. There isn't anything solid to go on in the rulebook or archive as far as I can see.

Imbue Chi is actually cast by the Shugenja in your Province, according to Jeff. This is one of those "First Cardinal Rule" exemptions, since the card tells you to target a Shugenja in the Province and only works when you have no one in play.
