Gozoku Influence, when exactly ?

L5R CCG Rules board, 10 March 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 10 March 2005

Reaction: After the Resolution Segment begins, target a Courtier Personality or a Gozoku Personality you control: Target a unit at the current battlefield and another unit with the same controller. Their controller may show you his hand. If he does, you may discard a card from it; otherwise, switch the targets' locations.

Can this action change the result of the resolution ?

To put it straight:

Does it takes place before we add and compare force total or non ?

Can this action change the result of the resolution?

No (Diamond rules, pg. 82).

Martin Lund (rules official), 10 March 2005

Hey Zen,

Would the Reaction's timing influence this at all?

It says after the Resolution Segment begins. Can that be before the Force Totals are calculated to determine who wins and who loses? Page 82 and 83 are a bit vague on that.

This is a conservative ruling. Because there haven't been any other cards that alter battle outcomes in the Resolution Segment, and the timing does has a bit of ambiguity, I err on the side of caution. It's not like this ruling makes the card ineffective.

If an effect happens "during" one of your Phases, you can have it happen any time in the Phase that you want. [DW, 12/9/96]

Does this allow such an effect to come before "beginning of the Phase / Segment" effects or after "end of the Phase / Segment" effects?

I think it has to fall between those two Reaction windows.

That's what we have Jeff for, though.

Jeff Alexander (rules official), 10 March 2005

Gozoku Influence can change the outcome of the battle. Effects that occur when or immediately after the Resolution Segment begins occur before final army Force totals are calculated.
