Rewards of Experience and Hidden Dagger

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 July 2015 to 15 July 2015

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

If i have a Samurai personality in the battle, with a Hidden Dagger. Can i use a Rewards of Experience against a unit with higher force, and can i use the Hidden Dagger"s interrupt, that give -2 force before action resolves?

Yes, you may.

Normally you'd be prevented from selecting the unit you want to select. However, the Targeting Paradoxes section of the CR says that as long as you have an effect that will make it legal, it's okay to take the action; you're then compelled to use the Hidden Dagger's Interrupt (or another similar effect) to make the targeting legal.

After discussion, I was incorrectly applying the targeting paradox rule because of a misread on the timing of Hidden Dagger. Hidden Dagger doesn't trigger until after you check whether the targets are legal. Therefore the -2F will not be in effect when choosing targets, and you cannot use it to make an otherwise illegal target legal for Rewards of Experience.
