More Aroru sensei questions

L5R CCG Rules board, 5 June 2015 to 7 June 2015

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

So this is piggy backing off of the whole Aroru/Saigyo thing.

Do not Delay Your target unbowed Personality challenges a target Personality. He may refuse. If he does not refuse, destroy the duel's loser. If he does refuse, permanently give your Personality the ability, "Battle: Challenge a target enemy Personality. Bow the loser."

Now my question is thus, based on my understanding from why Aroru does not work with Saigyo, does he also not work it the Battle duel that is created should this duel be refused? Battle: Challenge a target enemy Personality. Bow the loser.

Since this Duel also does no have the word "target" in it pertaining to that personality does it not work? And to that end if any other personalities in the future that would have a printed duel action on them if their actions do not say that target any specific ninja personality then Aroru would also not work with those duel abilities either?

If this is true then as I would understand it Aroru only truly works when a duel card says to target your person and another person as shown in the first part of Do not Delay, but the subsequent ability that it would give the personality. Am i correct in this assumption, because if i am I've been misplaying Aroru quite a few times in my games.

thanks for the clarification

Your assumptions seem to be correct. Because the Battle ability granted by Do Not Delay does not target its Personality when used, Aroru Sensei will not work in conjunction with it (or, in general, any duel on a Personality unless specifically worded to target the Personality with the ability). Aroru Sensei will work when Do Not Delay is played as a Limited.
