"Remote"

L5R CCG Rules board, 17 May 2015 to 18 May 2015

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

Lots of cards on Oracle have the "Remote" keyword, seemingly in place of the wording "Target your dude at any location".

As per the rules, the Oracle wording is the only one usable. However Remote isn't a keyword defined anywhere, meaning a large swathe of cards literally work nothing like what was intended (or at all in some cases).

What's the deal with that?

Remote is defined in the Legacy rules: Like the ability-modifying keyword Home (definition 3), a Remote ability may be used even if the card it is on is at home OR ALSO if it is at another battlefield, rather than at the current battlefield, as an exception to the Rule of Location.

Can you confirm the Legacy rules apply to other formats that use these cards too? (EG. Modern)

Well, Mr. Legacy (me) has been somewhat lax of late keeping up with all the varying Formats and their rulesets, however, I believe it's still generally true that a number of cards playable in said formats simply can't work WITHOUT Legacy rules (Ninjutsu, Regions, Border Keep, et al), so they'd have to apply, wouldn't they?
