While most people play SCM as Palmer specified, I'm not sure it is the correct way to play it. In the CR, under Recruit, you find this:
Sometimes, as with Equip, “Recruit” is used as an effect in card text. This means that the effects of the Recruit action are activated, and the card’s Gold Cost is checked against the amount paid for the original action. If the original action did not give the opportunity to pay Gold, then before the card enters play, its Gold Cost must be paid or the entering play fails.
As Second City market gives you the posibility to pay up front (it has the gold icon, so according to this, the action itself has a gold cost), that's when you pay the gold: before resolution.
So the sequence should be: 1. Announce the action 2. Pay cost (produce gold here) 3. Resolve effects (fetch a holding, destroy SCM)
If I am mistaken, could you clarify why?
Thanks!
