A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Quick question about The Abbot. How does his first trait work? This is no longer EE (or earlier). Paying costs now comes before targeting. So, for example I could:
Step A.) Announce the Battle: Melee 2 ability on Unholy Strike Step B.) I pay any costs (bowing or gold) associated with the ability, which are none Step C.) No one plays any interrupts Step D.) I resolve the action, targeting The Abbot. At this point, the gold cost of the action increases by 2, but under the IvE rules, that has no effect. And The Abbot dies.
Moreover, AFAIK you couldn't even pay the 2 gold ahead of time during Step B, as at that point you are technically overpaying for an action, which this thread points out as being impossible in IvE.
I fully understand the intent of the trait on The Abbot, I just don't see how it currently interacts with the Ivory ruleset at all. I think to be kosher with the new rules it would have to say something like: "After each time The Abbot is targeted by another player's action, negate all remaining effects of that action unless that player pays 2 gold."
Thank you
