Ikoma Akinari + Satoru Sensei

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 October 2014 to 26 October 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi,

In a battle, I play Satoru Sensei on my Ikoma Akinari in a province. I'm opposed and able to pay 7G and put him into play with Reserve, and then I decide to invest 10G (the other 2 Akinaris are on the deck).

Question: - Where do the Ikoma Akinari from the deck go when they enter play? The current battle or home?

Also, a plus question: - I have Akinari 1 and Akinari 2 in my provinces and Akinari 3 on my deck. if I decide to invest with Akinari 1, will I put Akinari 2 and Akinari 3 into play, or only Akinari 3?

Code: Select all Ikoma Akinari Text Invest : Search your discard pile and Dynasty deck for one or two copies of Akinari. Recruit them, ignoring costs. This Invest cost cannot be reduced.

Satoru Sensei Battle, w: Target your non-Unique Samurai face-up in a Province. Give him Reserve. Unless he is a Scout and you control a Terrain, give him +2 Gold Cost.

Thanks!

Firstly, note that, regardless of what the reminder text says, you must decide whether or not to Invest somewhat earlier than you describe. According to p55 of the Comprehensive Rules: "Before paying for a card entering play, a player may permanently increase the card’s Gold Cost by the additional cost in its Invest trait, once, to get an additional effect after it enters play."

Thus, if you want to Invest Akinari, you must pay 17g (or 15g if you had a Terrain in play), in step B, "Pay costs", of the action procedure. This means that if the action is canceled by, say, The Sun Returns, the whole of the gold expenditure is wasted.

Personalities entering play during a battle enter play at the current battlefield, unless otherwise stated. See p37 of the Comprehensive Rules.

The rules for Search, on p60 of the Comprehensive Rules, are unclear what happens when you search for multiple cards, so your bonus question is under discussion.

I don't understand why the bonus question is under discussion. It's pretty clear that akinari doesn't let you search provinces. Why is there even any doubt about this? (Genuinely confused and wondering if I'm missing something)

My apologies: cards in Provinces are not in decks, so you may not Recruit the extra copies of Akinari from there, only from your discard pile and/or deck.

The point that was under discussion was whether you can search for one copy of Akinari from your discard pile, and the other from your deck, as the Comprehensive Rules are a little ambiguous regarding searching for multiple cards from multiple areas. This will be clarified in the next update to the Comprehensive Rules, but the upshot is that you may do this.
