If I have used Voice of Experience to increase the focus value of Heirloom Tanto, by discarding it to the phoenix stronghold for example. Does it focus for a 4 or 5? Does it get focused face-down or face-up.

Cards are focused face down and focused cards are out of play, so if you focus it from the discard pile, it would lose its bonus from Voice of Experience.
