Just for clarification, any stolen item my opponent took that is destroyed, it goes into their discard, correct?
Or, does it go into the original owner?

From the Discard Piles entry of the Comprehensive Rules, pg 19:
If a card a player owns is about to enter another player’s discard pile, it enters the owner’s corresponding discard pile instead.
