Vast Paddy Fields and the Recruit action

L5R CCG Rules board, 30 April 2014 to 3 August 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I announce the Recruit action for Step A. I bow Vast Paddy Fields during Step B. I chose the holding to recruit during Step D.

Since Vast Paddy Fields' trait is triggered during step B, it doesn't know I'm paying for a Farm and thus shouldn't trigger the refill. If that is so, in what situation does this card work?

The refill will be triggered (and delayed until the actual moment of refilling) as soon as it is known that a farm is being paid for. The card works. Please stop trying to find some justification for it not working.

In regards to this response.

Please could you give more detail as to how the card works with specific reference to the steps for taking an action on page 27 of the comprehensive rules and the recruit action (page 37).

I find it difficult to accept that it has taken almost three months to determine that the card works as written without any issues and that anyone suggesting otherwise is essentially trying to make trouble. The intention of this (and other cards) are clear, but the rules, as I understand them, don't seem to support such an intention. When the issue was first spotted I was expecting a slight change to the recruit action, such as the player stating at step A which card was being recruited as they announced the recruit action (so the recruit action would technically be Recruit [name of card]), or some other method of pre-targeting choice selection, in a similar vein to the choice conflicts rule on pages 33-34.

Vast Paddy Fields creates a delayed effect which triggers when you refill the province.
