L5R CCG Rules board, 10 April 2014 to 24 April 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I'm confused about whether you can , or not recruit an experienced personality with an experience level of 2 if i already have the same personality in play but with an experience level of 1.

Example: I have Daidoji tametaka exp in play and wish to bring Daidoji tametaka exp2 into play without overlay.

In page 31 of the advanced rule book, it says that you can bring a personality with the same name into play as long as his experience level is superior to the one in play , and that overlaying is an option.

Thanks in advance, Regards!!!

Both Daidoji Tametaka Experienced and Daidoji Tametaka Experienced 2 are Unique, so you may not bring the latter into play if you control the former, but you can overlay.

I saw the above ruling and was absolutely shocked. Has my playgroup been playing the game wrong for the past three years!?

We've routinely played games where we've had both (say) Shinjo Kinto XP1 and Shinjo Kinto XP2 in play for the same player at the same time. Hell, I'm pretty sure this happened in at least one Kotei for one of our guys and no one had a problem with it.

Are you really only allowed to have *one* copy of a Unique Personality in play, regardless of their experience level?

Yes.

See the definition of Unique, on p59 of the Comprehensive Rules: Unique: A player will not bring into play or take control of a Unique card if he or she already controls a Unique card with the same title (but see Experienced, p. 49). If a player takes control of a unit with a copy of a Unique attachment he or she already controls, discard the new attachment.

Title is defined on p10: Card Title: At the top of every card is its title bar. All L5R cards have a title in this bar, except for created cards, which have no title.

All versions of Shinjo Kinto - Shinjo Kinto non experienced, Shinjo Kinto Experienced and Shinjo Kinto Experienced 2 - have the same title: "Shinjo Kinto".
