A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Sorry to be a pain, Still trying to get my head around this.
If something gets named, and I cannot perform anything after the limited, open designator, I can still announce it? For example, If Doji Makoto was named, and I didn't have the favor, can I then use doji makoto's ability?

No, because the Imperial Favor is "covered" by Good Faith Rule. Unlike other effects, you need to have either the Favor or an alternate means of activating the sequence (bowing the Stronghold in the case of Imperial Summons, or Favor tokens from Kyuden Otomo XP)
Note that if you had the Favor, you'd be able to announce Doji Makoto XP's ability and you wouldn't have to discard the Favor (because that also gets negated)
