Recruiting and Entering Play

L5R CCG Rules board, 13 February 2014 to 14 February 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Just looking through the rulebook and thought about a possible combo, but wasn't sure how it worked out. The cards in question are School of Wizardry, Secluded Outpost, and either Koan's Jingsa or Shiba Tsukimi XP5.

The question is - If I have Shiba Tsukimi XP5 or other human Samurai in my province I bow Secluded Outpost do the personalities enter play at this point so that if I attach a spell to Tsukimi or Koan's Jingsa to the human samurai giving them the Shugenja keyword? And if so, could I then bow the School of Wizardry to reduce the rest of the gold cost to 0 for the personality? Thanks for your time! Always appreciate your consideration.

The Recruit action has a Gold cost that must be paid *fully* before the entering-play effects begin to resolve. Otherwise, the Recruit effects would fail to bring the Personality (that is, the comparison between Gold paid and Personality's current Gold cost shows that you can't start bringing her into play). Therefore, attachments such as Koan's Jingasa or spells on Tsukimi XP5 can't have an effect on the Recruit action's gold cost. You can't use School of Wizardry on them because the Gold cost must have been paid prior to that.
