Isawa Shunryu, the Infinite Eye

L5R CCG Rules board, 6 February 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

"Before you draw cards at the end of your turn, draw a card"

So just before I draw that card, does his trait trigger? Do I just draw my deck in dynasty?

The trait is triggered only by the rulebook end-of-turn card draw, exclusively. I admit the wording could be less ambiguous, but the intended meaning of the card is to refer exclusively to the rulebook effect of drawing at the end of the turn. No other card draw triggers the trait, and obviously not by the card draw created by a previous activation of the trait.

Don't take Shunryu's title to the letter

Just in relation to that, if it's triggered by the single end of turn card draw, is the pluralisation of "cards" in the text simply an artifact of the fairly vague wording?

(The answer was always obvious, it's just the removal of certain Game phases/steps is causing confusion for some people I've spoken to [and myself in a few situations] when confronted with slightly wonky wording like on Shunryu)

The pluralisation of cards refers that you could, in certain occasions, draw more than one card in your end of turn card draw. For example, An End to Hostilities. Shunryu's wording takes that possibility into account.
