A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

With the advanced rules now posted, I'm thinking this answer needs updating?
The new rules state:
"After you have paid the costs of an initial action that creates an attack effect from a card in a unit, as an Interrupt to that action, you may pay the costs of an action from another card in the same unit that is appropriate to the phase and that creates another attack effect of the same kind..." (emphasis mine)
So you can't use Kalen's ability and then stack on his second ability as he is not another card in the unit. Is that correct?

As a slight addendum to this thread, the text in the Ivory rulebook of
After you have paid the costs of an initial action that creates an attack effect from a card in a unit, as an Interrupt to that action, you may pay the costs of an action from another card in the same unit that is appropriate to the phase and that creates another attack effect of the same kind, using that ability....You may combine more than one attack effect with the same initial action.
seems to imply that you could not simply announce Kalen's first RA action and then combine it with his second ability, as the rules specify the combining effect must come from another card in the unit.
My question is whether the phrase "another card" applies only from the standpoint of the initial card, or from all cards that are combining as well. For instance, I have a Kalen xp with a Spearmen attached. I bow the Spearmen for a Ranged 2, and as an interrupt, combine in his first RA action to make a Ranged 5. Can I then also combine in his second Ranged 3 to make a Ranged 8, as the action is on another card from where the originating effect came from?

That is correct. In Ivory edition, by the rulebook default, other Ranged Attack/Melee Attack/Fear effects that are being used to increase another similar effect cannot come from the same card as the original effect.

In this example, the Spearman can have is Ranged Attack combined with both of Kalen's Ranged Attack effects, as Kalen is not the same card as Spearman. Ruling Reversed. Please see the following post for explanation.

As we have stated in this thread, after some internal discussion, we are revising the interpretation of "another card" from the Ivory Edition Advanced Rulebook.
In order to avoid potentially abusive interactions with Repeatable abilities that produce Ranged Attacks, "another card" must mean exactly that for each ability that is producing and modifying the Ranged Attack action.
In more concise words, each ability contributing to the Ranged Attack must be from a separate card.
As such, in the above example Kalen can only use one of his abilities to Interrupt and increase the Ranged Attack action from the Spearman.
