Norikazu/Hamanari and "affecting" a battle

L5R CCG Rules board, 8 August 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A player, 8 August 2013

I happened to notice the updated wordings on Isawa Norikazu and his Life Model Decoy, Agasha Hamanari. Both original cards refer to

Code: Select all an Action card that (...) affects the battle, such as a Terrain

which have both been updated in Oracle to read as

Code: Select all before a Terrain Strategy from a player's hand enters play at [their] battlefield

Regarding the original wording, wouldn't a Strategy like Crushing Attack be considered "affecting the battle"? It is changing the state of the game by ending that battle's Combat Segment. If so, it is a non-Terrain Strategy card that "affects the battle," and would have been considered legal for negation under Norikazu and Son's old wordings, but not under the updated wordings.

Just curious regarding the apparent narrowing of the ability's effects.

"Affects the battle" was so ill-defined and nebulously arguable, that it was decided to narrow Norikazu/Hamanari's effects as you see, to something concise that wouldn't cause inconsistent rulings from case to case.
