A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I play Death of the Winds and search for a card that I cannot play (something that requires opposition while I am unopposed, searching for a terrain while their is already one in play, etc) what happens to the card. It stays in my hand or is it discarded?
If I search for a card that I cannot play, does this count as having passed?

An action taken as an additional action does not count towards ending the current action round if you pass: This additional opportunity to act can be used to pass; the choice to pass is made at the point of taking the additional action. If you pass, this does not count towards ending the action round.
If you do not play the card, it is just discarded, as described under Search: If an effect directs a player to search for a card and do something with it (such as play it or put it into the hand), and that thing fails, the card is discarded instead.
