A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

If I use the Halls of the Damned ability with my Moto Tsume (4F 4C) targeting my opponent's Hiruma Nikaru (7F 2C) is he able to use his O-Ushi Sensei to change the "check" in Halls of the Damned to the personality's force (thus making Nikaru an invalid target)?
My understanding is NO, simply because HotD's "check" happens during required targeting, not action resolution, thus the Sensei's trait hasn't kicked in yet.
For the action to fail, the hypothetical Halls of the Damned would have to be worded as "Battle: Bow your performing Shadowlands Human Personality and target an enemy Personality : If he has lower Chi than your personality, take control of him. After the turn ends, return control of him to the player from whom this action took him."
Am I correct? Same goes for Daigotsu xp3 yes?
Also, am I able to bring Daigotsu xp3 into play if Halls of the Damned is my stronghold? [Loyal trait vs. Shadowlands Horde "clan alignment"]
Halls of the Damned (the real one now):
Battle: Bow your performing Shadowlands Human Personality and target an enemy Personality with lower Chi: Take control of him. After the turn ends, return control of him to the player from whom this action took him.
O-Ushi Sensei:
Before the resolution of another player's card's action that targeted one of your Personalities: Each time it checks your Personalities' Chi or Personal Honor, you may have it check the Personality's Force instead. After your Personality enters a duel, if the duel was from another player's card's effect: You may choose to have your Personality use Force as his duel stat in that duel. You will not gain Honor from duels.
Daigotsu (xp3, Oracle text for the Battle action): Battle: Target an enemy Personality with lower Chi: Permanently give him Shadowlands. He succumbs to the Dark Lord's will. Take control of him (if you do so, he joins your army). If you now control him, destroy him after this battle ends.

Halls of the Damned (the real one now):
Battle: Bow your performing Shadowlands Human Personality and target an enemy Personality with lower Chi: Take control of him. After the turn ends, return control of him to the player from whom this action took him.
O-Ushi Sensei:

O-Ushi Sensei kicks in before the action begins to resolve. This will be after any targeting that happens in the constraints block, which includes both your examples. Steal away.
As for Daigotsu, that version is Loyal to the Spider Clan, not the Shadowlands Horde (or as us old people call it, Yogo Junzo's Army). So you will not be able to bring him into play if using a Shadowlands Horde stronghold, nor can you bring a "will not be controlled by a non-Shadowlands Horde player" Personality such as Fu Leng into play if using a Spider stronghold.
