Megumi's Guidance / Wide Valley vs. Chi death

L5R CCG Rules board, 20 February 2013 to 28 February 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

1) As an open action, I target my Red Hunger (1C) with Megumi's Guidance. My opponent then targets him with Frozen in Place (so he receives a -1C penalty). Does the Red Hunger die, or does he stay alive with 0C until the end of the turn? If it is the latter, then at the end of the turn the penalty or the protection wear off simultaneously so he will stay alive, right?

2) During a battle, I put Wide Valley into play. Then my Red Hunger is targeted by Frozen in Place. Does he die, or does he stay alive with 0C until the battle is resolved?

3) Now, my Red Hunger wears a Gift Armor and has received a -1C token from a previous action. After I used Megumi's Guidance or played Wide Valley, the armor gets removed (e.g. by Cursed Relic). Does Red Hunger die immediately?

Megumi's Guidance Battle/Open: Discard this card and choose your performing Personality: Negate his destruction from other players' cards' effects (until the turn ends).

Wide Valley Before an action's effect destroys a card in a unit: Negate the destruction.

Gift Armor Negate all current and new Chi penalties on this Personality.

According to the Chi Death rule, This destruction for having zero Chi may only be negated or prevented by effects that specifically negate or prevent destruction for having zero Chi.

Neither Megumi's Guidance nor Wide Valley specifically negate or prevent destruction for having zero chi, so Red Hunger will die in all scenarios described. Only Gift Armor can save Red Hunger.
