Remorseful Seppuku vs effects that prevent destruction

L5R CCG Rules board, 3 February 2013 to 4 February 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I have a dishonored Samurai in play. I target it with Megumi's Guidance. My opponent targets it with Remorseful Seppuku. Does it die (i.e. is an action that forces you to perform seppuku destroying you, or is the rulebook seppuku effect destroying you)?

Battle/Open: Discard this card and choose your performing Personality: Negate his destruction from other players' cards' effects (until the turn ends).

Limited: Target a dishonorable Samurai: He commits seppuku.

Seppuku can't be negated, so the Personality would die regardless.

In case you're curious, not because a card has been previewed that causes a card to commit seppuku *ahem*, seppuku is considered to come from the action or trait that created it (last paragraph of the Seppuku definition). So if you use the Seppuku rulebook action, it is a rulebook effect, but if you use a card that forces a personality to commit seppuku, it is that card's effect.

My opponent's family honor is at -5 and my opponent targets one of my dishonered personalities with Remorseful Seppuku. If I play Bad Kharma on his Remorseful Seppuku, does my personality still commit since seppuku is not negatable?

Bad Kharma negates the action's effects. Seppuku can't be negated and the destruction and rehonoring come "from" the action that created the seppuku. Ergo, Bad Kharma can't negate the seppuku created by Remorseful Seppuku.

Seppuku, seppuku everywhere

Seppuku, seppuku everywhere

I'm not sure this is correct. Relevant card text:

Bad Kharma: Reaction: After another player with Family Honor of -1 or lower announces an action on a Strategy: He ignores the action's costs. Negate its effects.

Remorseful Seppuku: Limited: Target a dishonorable Samurai: He commits seppuku.

From what I understand, the seppuku happens after targeting, whereas Bad Kharma happens when the action is announced, way before any seppuku comes into effect. Why would Bad Kharma not negate the action?

Playing an action: A: Announce the Action (at this point, a player has to play Bad Kharma.) B: Choose Performers C: Required targeting D: Pay costs E: Actions Resolution (the seppuku)

I may be wrong, but if so i'm curious as to why.

Because seppuku reads:

If an effect directs a Personality to commit seppuku, apply the following effects: “Rehonor the Personality, then destroy him; these effects will not be negated.”

So Remorseful Seppuku would essentially mean: Limited: Target a dishonorable Samurai: “Rehonor him, then destroy him; these effects will not be negated.”

(in a similar way to Ranged / Melee Attacks being shorthands for longer texts) As it has been ruled over and over, "will not be negated" trumps negation effects, such as those of Bad Kharma.

So, again, Bad Kharma tries to negate Remorseful Seppuku's effects, but "these effects can't be negated" in the seppuku set of effects trumps Bad Kharma's negation.
